North Macedonia and the Green Climate Fund

North Macedonia’s partnership with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) began in 2017, aiming to build national readiness for engagement with the Fund. Early support focused on strengthening institutional capacities and establishing the systems and processes needed to access and manage climate finance. As a small, landlocked country in southeastern Europe, North Macedonia faces a range of climate-related risks, including floods, droughts, landslides, and wildfires—making investment in resilience and mitigation a national priority.

Since then, North Macedonia has steadily enhanced its strategic engagement with the GCF to support the country’s transition toward a low-emission and climate-resilient economy. The GCF portfolio in North Macedonia currently includes:

  • USD 63 million in total GCF-approved financing – Readiness and funding proposals

  • 6 Readiness projects, with over USD 5.4 million in approved support
63 USD million
6 projects
5.4 USD million

These efforts are coordinated under the leadership of the Office of the President of the Government of North Macedonia, acting as the National Designated Authority (NDA). The six Readiness projects have been implemented in cooperation with several GCF Accredited Entities, including FAO, GIZ, and UNDP.

Through these initiatives, North Macedonia is laying the groundwork for impactful climate investments aligned with its Enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (ENDC) under the Paris Agreement and its EU accession objectives.
